Jean Monnet Chair

 

From September 2011 till August 2014 Department of Political Science and Public Administration of Yurii Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University will implement the Project “Approaching towards comprehensive knowledge of the European integration in Ukraine”. The project is supported by Jean Monnet Programme and founded by the European Union. The Chair holder in this project is Prof. Anatoliy Kruglashov.

 The project aims at preparing qualified specialists (experts) in the field of European integration among undergraduate and postgraduate students of Y. Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations.

 The main project activities are:

1) Teaching of three courses on European Studies:

- «Theory and History of European Integration» - to 3-d year students of BA programme in Political Science (specialization «European and regional integration»);

- «European Union Institutions and Political Processes» - to 3-d year students of BA programme in Political Science (specialization «European and regional integration»);

- «Policy of European Integration of Ukraine» - to MA students in Public Administration.

2) Publishing of the textbooks to each of courses, which have no equivalents in Ukraine.

3) Regional scientific and methodical seminar «New Methods of Teaching Courses on European Studies».

4) All-Ukrainian scientific and methodical seminar «Writing and Publication of educational literature on European Studies in Ukraine: quality assessment and perspectives».

5) Regional research and practical conference «Studying Contemporary Processes of European Integration in the System of Training of Public Officials».

6) Organizing the sittings of EuroClub with the participation of students, post-graduates and experts in European Studies.

7) Special panels devoted to discussing the process of European integration and relations between Ukraine and the EU within the annual international research conference of students and post-graduates.

 

All project activities are public and anyone can access them as a listener or take a direct part in their organization or conducting! Visiting lectures and seminars with courses taught within the project, is open to all students from any schools of Chernivtsi and Chernivtsi region.

Professor of Jagiellonian University, Poland (2006 – 2008), Visiting Professor of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada (1998-1999, 2002-2003), Invited Professor, Centre of European and Transatlantic Studies, EHU, Minsk, Belarus (2001-2004). Author of over 30 monographs and publications on European integration.

Estimated results of the project activities can be described by the benefits derived to its main target groups. The main benefits for students are the following:  

- acquisition of the comprehensive knowledge about European Integration processes, improving the standards and quality of academic training of students and their analytical capabilities that will help them understand the European and international relations better and imply this knowledge in their perspective professional activity;

- obtaining helpful textbooks and other teaching materials (both printed and electronic), which can be used in the process of studying different issues of European Integration processes, including lifelong education of Public servants, Universities and Schools Teachers, and Civic society activists in Ukraine; 

- enhancing motivations, quality and improving results of graduate and postgraduate students’ involvement in learning European Studies and research on European integration issues. 

The main benefits for the teaching staff of high schools and universities are: 

- engagement the teachers of Social and Political Science of Universities and High schools in studying the issues of European integration;

- improvement of their teaching skills and methods of delivering the courses on European Studies;

- strengthening cooperation between teachers and researchers working in the field of European Integration in the region and in Ukraine;

- dissemination of professional information and forming positive attitude towards studying and teaching the subjects (courses) of “European Studies” in higher educational institutions of Ukraine. 

 At last but not the least, the benefit derived by the public servants lies in the improvement of the courses related to European Integration in the system of training of public servants and NGO leaders, and as a result of that there is expected to be increase of the professional competence and effectiveness of graduates and future officials in the region, neighboring with the European Union and country aspiring towards integration in the EU.

 Reference:

Jean Omer Marie Gabriel Monnet (November 9, 1888, Cognac, Charente, France - March 16, 1979, Paris, France) - French businessman and politician. He was one of the founding fathers of the European Union. From 1920 to 1923 he was Deputy General Secretary of the League of Nations. In 1946-1950 Jean Monnet was the head of the French General Planning Commission and had developed a program of the French economy modernization. Monnet was the first head of the created with the participation of six countries “European Coal and Steel Community” (ECSC), which was the forerunner of the European Union. In 1955 Monnet founded the Action Committee for the United States of Europe, which became the driving force behind the initiatives which laid the constructing of European unity, including the “Common Market”, European Commission and the European Council of Ministers, British membership in the Community, the European Monetary System and the European Parliament. Throughout his life, Jean Monnet was repeatedly awarded various prizes. On April 2, 1976 he was declared the first honorary citizen of Europe.
